Product
safety is paramount in industry today. Safety issues must be resolved
quickly and thoroughly. Miles Loretta has served as chairman of
Cincinnati Machine’s product safety committee. In this role,
he conducted product safety audits, investigated accidents, reviewed
and approved all safety signage.
Miles
also served as chairman of an ANSI safety standard
committee. This committee wrote a new United States safety standard
for CNC machining centers.
In
resolving safety issues it is important to use analysis tools
that not only rate safety issues, but compares and analyzes potential
solutions. Miles uses the H.A.S. (Hazard Analysis System)
tool for this analysis. Through a process of team discussions
and ratings, this tool assigns risk values to situations for comparing
solutions.
Common
rules for resolving safety issues:
1. Design out the hazard, if that’s not possible,
2. Design a safety interlock, if that’s not possible,
3. Warn about the hazard.
Miles
has led many H.A.S. teams and has taught over
100 employees how to use this powerful tool.
